Windows Update 1607 Failed To Install
May 10, 2019 - With the May 2019 feature update to Windows 10 (version 1903) almost. To a failed update — just aren't worth the bother of installing and setting up. The “Update to Windows 10 Versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709. Windows Update Failed to Install - posted in Windows 10 Support: Windows did an automated update on 3/15 for my Windows 10 64 bit PC.
So this is a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1607 system, Insider edition on a slow ring. Some days ago it was repeatedly failing KB3176934
with the same 0x800F0922
. I didn't find out the root cause and how to prevent it. My purpose is to find other who has exactly this same problem and figure out a solution. If someone already has a solution - even better.
Windows 10 upgrade (1607) failed to install (8 times) 11:26 AM. Tried the Upgrade using Windows Update, and like with the original Upgrade, it has proven to be the least reliable way to do it. So, I used a different way - that worked!
Looking at the CBS directory, back from 08/26/2016 when the KB3176934
was failing I see a 22GB (!) log file. It seems like that there was 'some' deadlock:
Fallout 4 good mods. I will still try to put some time aside in the future to put a fresh twist on this guide, but until then just use it to learn, I highly doubt it still functions entirely. Also check out the ( Under Heavy Construction)Notice: The Change Log will only hold the Last Five Days that Updates were applied so check back often! It is Important too keep in mind that just because a mod has been Removed does not mean it should be considered a bad mod. It simply means that I found something that was more my Preference. If it made this list before I assure you the mod is a Great mod!Change Log: Major Update Completed on 4- 28- 16(If you choose to Update your mods.
This goes on for more than an hour taking up 22 GBs - talk about a tiny deadlock!
Moving onto 08/30/2016:
2016-08-30 15:16:03, Info CBS Not able to add file to extract: update.ses [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND] 2016-08-30 15:16:03, Info DPX Started DPX phase: Resume and Download Job
..happening multiple times and..
whole bunch of this:
This is maybe not critical:
Trying some sid S-1-5-80-1448039036-2013904622-3830678473-3382385916-2632875139
which is not present in my system. And we are onto writing WER
, which looks like has trouble in itself:
seems like that the lack of this sid
fails the installer, which is the final error code in the Event Logs: 0x800f0922 - CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED
:
Then with the recent KB3176938
I see similar errors:
craziness

Same non critical driver mishap:
seems like again the lack of this sid
causes the rollback:
So maybe the key is the sid

, but I cannot find anything about it with web searches.

Windows 10 Version 1607 Fails To Install
Downloaded the Anniversary Update (Windows10Upgrade28084.exe
) but it presents an empty dialog only with an Exit button.
Maybe the problem is that this KB3176938
is always in the 'installed and restart needed' phase, so I'm not able to install other things? Just guessing..
Trying to force install the KB3176938 after manually downloaded the CAB
file.
Manually installing KB3176938 form a manually downloaded cabinet was not successful either. I was thinking maybe to start the install from safe mode, but the error comes really at the end of the install procedure, the computer restarted and again went to almost 100% progress. I feel like I'm in a 22-catch situation. First I'd like to stop the windows update from forcing this update.
See answer. After the repair with Windows10_InsiderPreview_Client_x64_en-us_14393.iso
I got KB3176934 and a couple of more updates. Seems to work fine now. Looking back, maybe at some point I did (or the system offered?) the anniversary update? Maybe that's not a good idea for an Insider Win10.

The last way to repair a Windows is called Repair Install/Inplace Upgrade.
Download the 1607 ISO, mount the ISO via double click on the ISO. Now navigate to the virtual DVD drive, run setup.exe
and select to keep all applications/settings
This repairs Windows and should fix this issue.

I've been doing local tech support for several years and I fix almost every problem I come across. This problem on my personal computer has me at a loss for anything to else to try.
Windows updates fails every single time it tries to install 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607'.
I am currently on 1511 Build 10586.753.
I should mention I have symblink/dirjunct between my HDD and SSD and this problem is also happening to another computer in my home.
Here is the list of things I have tried:
Running windows update multiple times
Running windows update troubleshooter
Disabling firewall / uninstalling antivirus and attempting to install
Running the update through windows media creation tool
Running the update through windows standalone upgrader
Running Sfc /scannow
Running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Disabling all startup programs in task manager
Attempting an upgrade off a flash drive with windows upgrader on it
Reinstalling my audio/graphics driver
Unplugging every USB device during installation
Trying to download the update off of windows update catalog (It says the update isn't applicable to this computer)
Following an online registry fix to set Allow Upgrade to true
Scanning with Malwarebytes.
Uninstalling recently installed programs
Reading windows update logs for clues

I can upload a copy of the error file if that would be helpful.
Thanks,
Jon
